Vietnam’s first airline to use sustainable aviation fuel on all flights from Europe

admin

Vietnam Airlines has become the first Vietnamese airline to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on flights departing from Europe, starting January 1, 2025.

According to Vietnam Airlines, all of its flights departing from European airports from January 1, 2025, will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Initially, SAF will be blended at a minimum ratio of 2%, gradually increasing to 6%, 20%, and 70% in 2030, 2035, and 2050 respectively.

For flights departing from the United Kingdom, Vietnam Airlines will also implement SAF usage at a minimum ratio of 2% starting in 2025, with the proportion increasing to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.

A representative of Vietnam Airlines stated that this milestone reinforces the national carrier’s pioneering role in the aviation industry’s green transition. The initiative contributes to Vietnam’s commitment, together with the global community, to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It also allows passengers to enjoy high-quality flight experiences while supporting environmentally responsible travel, helping to shape a more sustainable future for aviation.

Previously, the national carrier successfully operated flight VN660 from Singapore to Hanoi on May 27, 2024, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel. This marked the first time a Vietnamese airline used SAF for a passenger flight.

Currently, SAF prices remain significantly higher than conventional fossil-based aviation fuel—typically two to three times more expensive, and at times even five to six times higher. It is estimated that the use of SAF will increase Vietnam Airlines’ operating costs for routes to and from Europe by approximately USD 4.8 million per year.

In addition to adopting SAF, Vietnam Airlines is actively implementing various measures to reduce CO₂ emissions. These include operating new-generation aircraft, enhancing operational procedures to improve fuel efficiency, optimizing flight routes and schedules, and reducing aircraft weight to minimize fuel consumption.

The airline also maintains advanced IT systems to monitor fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, with independent third-party verification for reporting to authorities. In 2024 alone, fuel-saving initiatives helped reduce nearly 70,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.

These efforts demonstrate the airline’s strong commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility in line with ESG principles (Environmental, Social, and Governance). Looking ahead, Vietnam Airlines will continue working with partners across the aviation supply chain to expand SAF adoption and promote comprehensive sustainability solutions, contributing to a carbon-neutral future for aviation.
