ASME – PART III: ASME compliance in manufacturing: Key factors to evaluate the manufacturer

In aviation fuel projects, the requirement for equipment to be “ASME compliant” is becoming increasingly common. However, in practice, not all equipment presented as “ASME-based” achieves the same level of compliance. The difference lies in how the standard is implemented throughout the manufacturing process. 

First, it is important to clearly distinguish between designing according to ASME principles and being ASME certified. Some manufacturers may apply ASME calculation methodologies in their designs, but do not hold official ASME certification or authorization to apply the ASME U-stamp. In international projects - especially in the aviation sector - certification and traceability requirements are often mandatory.

A truly ASME-compliant manufacturer must satisfy several integrated requirements:

  • Most importantly, a strictly controlled QA/QC system throughout the entire manufacturing process. This includes proper management of incoming materials with complete certification documents, ensuring full traceability for every equipment component.
  • Welding capability is another critical criterion. Welding procedures must be qualified, and welders must be certified in accordance with applicable technical requirements. Weld quality control should not stop at procedural compliance, but must also be verified through non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, and hydrostatic testing.
  • Another key aspect is the technical documentation and certification package accompanying the equipment. In real projects, acceptance is not based solely on the physical product, but also on a complete documentation package, including drawings, inspection reports, material certificates, and manufacturing records.

Deficiencies in any of these areas can lead to significant risks: equipment rejection at site, project delays, or additional corrective costs. This is also one of the most common mistakes when selecting suppliers based only on technical specifications or initial pricing.

In this context, selecting a manufacturer with full ASME certification, combined with experience in aviation fuel systems, is essential to ensure consistency from design and manufacturing to actual operation.
